- it's important to distinguish the general reciprocity which is a feature of the commons (individuals reciprocating with the whole), from the reciprocity of the gift economy (reciprocity with other individuals or groups with the direct expectation of a return). DB: Not accurate description of gift economy, if you read Lewis Hyde or Marcel Mauss: the gift "goes around the corner" and others reciprocate, so a gift economy is generally not DIRECT reciprocity, but indirect.
